Seen from the threshold, muddy water fills a Murray slab room wall to wall, foam gathered at the doorway and stored things standing in it

Mapping a Murray Floor Before We Pump the Water Out

Stay out of the water until you know what is in it. Water on a slab has nothing below to soak into, so it runs sideways through carpet and pad instead. It keeps going under the base of every wall it meets.

What that water picked up on the way across the room decides how much of your floor survives. Clean water off a supply line spreads exactly the way dirty water does, and from the doorway they look the same. The difference shows up later, in what we are allowed to leave behind.

Removal follows that call. Call us and say how deep it is. Water deeper than an inch goes out with a submersible pump set in the low corner.

Carpet and pad come next under a water claw, a weighted head that presses into the pile and lifts water back up through it.

Why we sort the water before we sort the floor

Clean water that ran under a wall and out into the hall can often dry right where it lies. Water carrying waste or yard soil that ran the same distance is a demolition job instead. The carpet, the pad and the bottom band of drywall all leave the house.

So we settle the category before we draw the removal line. Draw that line first and you either tear out material that was fine, or you dry contaminated material in a room where somebody sleeps.

  • Category first, because the same wet edge means drying in place for one kind of water and a tear-out for the next.
  • Deep water next, pumped out of the low corner while the rest of the floor still holds it.
  • Carpet and pad after that, worked in slow overlapping passes rather than one fast sweep.
  • Doorways and thresholds late, since a slab pushes water under them into rooms nobody checked.
  • Numbers the whole way through, so the pass ends on a line we can show you.

Which Water Ended Up on Your Murray Floor

Age shapes the water calls in this city, and the housing stock spells it out. Of Murray's 21,421 housing units, 54.2 percent predate 1980, and the 1970s alone account for 5,747 of them. Detached houses make up 52.3 percent of that stock.

Most of what we pump out of those houses started clean. A burst or frozen pipe does it, and so does a water heater splitting at its seam. A dishwasher or washing machine supply line behind the appliance does the same.

A swamp cooler, the evaporative box on the roof, drips clean water down through a ceiling the whole time it runs. Clean or not, all of it turns dirty after a day in carpet.

The middle group shows up dirty already. A toilet or fixture overflow carries whatever was in the bowl, and a failed sump pump hands back the groundwater it had been holding. An ice dam or a roof leak brings down whatever sat in the gutter and the attic insulation.

The last group costs you the most material. Sewer and drain backups arrive dirty from the first second, and so does seepage pushing through a basement wall. Snowmelt and storm runoff arrive the same way at ground level, and irrigation backflow shoves lawn water back into the house.

Murray City publishes its own stormwater program pages, which show how the public half of that drainage should work.

Meters Set the Drying Schedule on a Murray Slab

Concrete gives water back slowly. A slab pulls moisture into its top layer while the floor is flooded, then releases it for days after the surface feels normal underfoot.

So we build the drying plan on what we can measure inside the concrete and the framing. Air movers go in low along the walls, so the air sweeps the floor instead of churning the middle of the room.

Dehumidifiers pull out the moisture those movers lift into the air, which is the half people forget. Where solid wood flooring is worth saving, a hardwood drying panel system clamps over the boards and draws water up through their face.

What we are watching while the equipment runs

  • The slab itself, probed at the wet line and well past it, so the concrete is not still feeding the room.
  • The wall base, checked behind the baseboard where drywall quietly wicks upward out of sight.
  • The air in the room, logged every day so we can tell whether the equipment is still achieving anything.

Structural drying is finished when those numbers hold flat for a full day. Equipment pulled early is the reason a floor sometimes has to be replaced twice.

Porous Material Is What Leaves a Contaminated Murray Floor

Hard sealed surfaces almost always stay. Concrete, tile, solid wood trim and finished cabinets can be cleaned and sanitized right there in the room once the water is gone.

Soft open material is the part people argue about. Carpet pad soaked in anything but clean water leaves every time, since nobody can clean the inside of a sponge.

Drywall that stood in dirty water comes off in a flood cut, a straight line opened a foot or two above the high water mark. The wall then dries from both faces at once.

Insulation behind that cut leaves with it whenever it got wet, because it dries slower than the framing around it. The National Weather Service guidance for what to do after a flood draws that same line on soft material.

  • Carpet pad, discarded whenever the water was anything other than clean at the source.
  • The bottom band of drywall, cut back to sound material rather than dried where it stands.
  • Wet insulation, pulled out with the drywall because it stays damp long after the studs have dried.
  • Anything pressed out of board, from bed frames to cabinet toe kicks, because the layers swell and stay swollen.

Lift the things you cannot buy again off the slab before you do anything else. A sewing machine left flat on the floor wicks quietly up through its base, and it is the thing somebody grieves over three days later.

Fireclay, Winchester, and the Four ZIP Codes We Work in Murray

The wider metro carries this city's name: the Census calls it the Salt Lake City-Murray, UT area. On the ground that comes to four ZIP codes, 84107, 84117, 84121 and 84123, with a city line 3.5 miles from where we stage equipment.

Fireclay sits in 84107 at 4,278 feet and Winchester in 84123 at 4,283, while the city figure itself is 4,337. There is very little fall across any of that, so water spreads flat here instead of running off.

AE, AH and X are the three federal flood zones drawn over this city. AH is the shallow ponding zone, and ponding over level ground walks into a garage and keeps going.

We take water damage restoration calls across Salt Lake City and the towns wrapped around it. Next door we cover Midvale, Millcreek and Holladay, and anyone calling from further out should check the service areas page first.

Water standing and untouched is an emergency water removal call. Water that came up out of a drain is a sewage cleanup job, and we draw that line wider.

The Pad and the Crawl Space Stay Wet Longest

How long does it take for a crawl space to dry out?

Longer than a finished room upstairs, usually the better part of a week. Crawl spaces have almost no natural airflow, bare dirt or a vapor barrier underfoot, and framing that soaks from below. Equipment stays down there until the wood numbers hold steady.

Will a wet carpet dry on its own?

The face of it will, and that is exactly the trap. The pad underneath holds several times its own weight and stays wet for weeks beneath a carpet that feels perfectly normal. And if the water was not clean at the source, drying was never the real question.

Is a slab leak an emergency?

Treat it as one. A line leaking under a slab has nowhere to send its water except sideways and up. It travels through the floor covering and into the base of the walls while the meter keeps turning.
